Overview

Integrated science at John XXIII is taught at Stage 1 and this course is designed for students who are interested in science. The course is based on an integrated view of scientific knowledge that draws on the traditional disciplines of science and new scientific technology to enable students to investigate issues that are interesting and relevant in a modern world.

Topics

Two topics are being studied this year:

  • AQUACULTURE (Introduction to aquaculture, Fisheries Management, construction of ponds/aquaria, water quality, solutions, biology of an organism, classification, adaptations, properties of water)
  • MICROBES, FOOD AND DRINK (Introduction to biotechnology, micro-organisms, microscopy, fermentation reactions, health and safety, food spoilage, food preservation, changes in technology, natural antibiotics)

Assessments

Tests and Examinations: 20% | Investigations and Practical tasks: 40% | Explanations: 40%

There are no mid-year or end-year examinations for Stage 1 WACE courses

Reporting

A brief interim report on class work and behaviour will be issued towards the end of Term 1. The achievement for each unit will be reported as a College A-E grade as well as a percentage mark for the unit and an examination mark. In addition, the student's approach to class work and behaviour will be reported via the usual key performance indicators

Student expectations

Many of the lessons will be presented in an interactive lecture style. However, most of the lessons will involve practical activities. Students will be expected to take brief notes during class. All presentations given to students will be available to them through Simon, under the appropriate "Learning Area".
